Over the weekend, Van Gundy resigned after a disappointing 10-9 start this season. It appears Van Gundy had enough of the NBA game and its players, although he told reporters he stepped down for family reasons.
He was replaced by former Pistons coach Don Chaney.
"I respect that he (Van Gundy) walked away, but I am surprised," Dumars said. "The reason I felt so high on him as a coach was that no matter what his personnel was, they came ready to play every night. You knew you had a fight on your hands and you had to play your best to beat them. That is the mark of a good coach."
