Point guard Sam Cassell could come to terms with the Milwaukee Bucks on a contract extension before Jan. 1, his agent said Tuesday.

Charles Tucker, the Michigan-based agent who represents Cassell and Bucks forward Glenn Robinson, said it would be important for Cassell to re-sign before the first of the year for tax and contractual purposes.

Tucker, who was in Memphis to watch his clients play against the Grizzlies, said Cassell is still debating whether to re-sign with the Bucks or declare free agency in two years. But at this point, Tucker indicated that Cassell could be prepared to accept an extension from the team.

"We might have something in the next week or so," Tucker said.

The Bucks have placed a three-year, $17.1 million extension on the table for Cassell. Under terms of the collective-bargaining agreement, that is the most the Bucks can offer him.

Cassell, who four years ago locked himself into a six-year, $21 million contract while playing for the New Jersey Nets, is making about one-third the going rate for an elite-level point guard like himself. Outspoken in the past about his contract, Cassell has consistently declined comment regarding his intentions.
