The (AP) and Bloomberg news reports: Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who won six NBA championships, has agreed to coach the U.S. Basketball League's Oklahoma Storm this season.

It's the first head-coaching job at any level for the 54-year-old Abdul-Jabbar, who previously served as an assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Owner James Sears Bryant wouldn't disclose Abdul-Jabbar's salary.

"Kareem wants to run a franchise," Bryant said. "That's why they call this the league of opportunity. It's really not a money deal for him. It's an opportunity."

The 11-team league opens its season on April 19 and concludes in June.

"We have had many great former NBA players associated with the USBL, but to have Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is just fantastic for the league," Daniel Meisenheimer III, USBL founder and commissioner, said in a statement.

Abdul-Jabbar holds nine NBA records, including most points. A six-time Most Valuable Player, he played in 18 All-Star games and won titles with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers. He scored 38,387 points in his career.
