There?s been lots of talk about where Stromile Swift will start this season.  Not whether he?ll play the three or four position, but whether he?ll still be in Memphis.

The conjecture heated up during the summer when the Grizzlies added the number four overall pick (Drew Gooden) to last year?s number three pick and rookie-of-the-year, Pau Gasol.  Both players are power forward, the same as Stromile Swift.  Swift, of course, was the second overall pick two years ago.

Which is quite a logjam, and quite a concentration of high draft picks in one position.

Even Gasol weighed in, saying, ?Something has to give. There are three good players for one spot," Gasol said. "There's no way that the three of us can get (quality) minutes.?

But the odds of Swift being traded seem to be lengthening.  Grizzlies president Jerry West says that, ?To say that I haven't talked to people about him would not be the truth.  To say there's something serious would be a lie. There's nothing imminent.?

There?s also uncertainty about Swift?s health that may slow down any trade possibilities.  Swift was known to be a project when he was drafted, and proved to be a slow learner in his first season.  During his second season, he was in and out of the line-up with health issues.  During the off-season he underwent surgery on his right baby toe (same surgery Shaq had), and now has a pin in the pinky.

Teams that are interested in Swift ? including the Grizz ? likely will want to see what his value is be before making a move.

Ron Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal adds that the logjam may be minimized somewhat by having Drew Gooden see a lot of his time at the small forward position.

Also, Gasol can play a bit at center since the team does not have a true NBA-ready center.

So expect to watch the situation develop through the fall, because there may not me any Swift player movement here.
