Has North Carolina moved?

The Washington Wizards have acquired scoring-phenom Jerry Stackhouse from the Detroit Pistons, ESPN's David Aldridge is reporting.  The Pistons received guard/forward Richard Hamilton in return.

The trade, which is expected to be finalized tonight, would give the Wizards a Tar Heel flavor with Michael Jordan, center Brendan Haywood and Stackhouse all respected North Carolina alumni.

Other players involved in the trade are forward Brian Cardinal and center Ratko Varda from the Pistons and guard Hubert Davis and guard-forward Bobby Simmons from the Wizards.

"When you have the opportunity to add an All-Star player of Jerry's caliber, you can't hesitate on the chance to strengthen the team,'' Wizards general manager Wes Unseld said. "We had to part with several players we were very high on, but we feel we have improved.''

Stackhouse, a two-time All-Star selection, has a career scoring average over seven NBA seasons of 21.2 points, the highest among any player taken in the 1995 draft. Drafted third overall by Philadelphia, he was traded to Detroit in 1997. His best season came in 2000-01, when he finished second in the league with a 29.8-point average

Coach Doug Collins said Tuesday that he plans to use Michael Jordan as a backup behind Hamilton if Jordan decides to play another season. Now it appears that Jordan will play behind Stackhouse. Jordan is expected to announce his plans for the season later this month, but he has said he wants to play if his ailing knees will let him.
