Peter Vescey of the New York Post brings us a very juicy column today, one which should make for some interesting reading for all the folk in Minneapolis and all the fans of the Timberwolves.

Vescey claims that ?sources? indicate that there is a case out there very similar to that of the Timberwolves regarding the handling of signing a fringe free agent, ah la Joe Smith.  ?A dumped agent swears there's proof documenting the desecration; he's weighing the consequences (ratting on himself figures to lead to decertification - temporary or irrevocable - unless given immunity) of turning over the evidence to David Stern,? writes Vescey.

So who exactly is it?  What team does this player play for?  Vescey is not revealing any answers, but one thing is for certain David Stern will be asking questions.

One has to wonder why any team would risk their future to sign a fringe player after seeing what happened to the Timberwolves.  Minnesota lost multiple first round draft picks, were fined millions of dollars, and had the contract of Joe Smith revoked for the under the table dealings between GM Kevin McHale and Smith?s agent at the time.  While Smith was able to move onto the Pistons the other two were ultimately suspended.

The Sacramento Kings faced a similar inquest a few seasons back when the league looked into the contractual arrangements for Corliss Williamson thanks to the testimony of his former agent, but the league cleared the Kings of any wrongdoing.

But in this case, Vescey claims, names are being withheld to protect the guilty.  No doubt we?ll all be hearing more on this case in the near future.
