General manager Chris Wallace could write an advertising campaign for Barcelona, where he continued his nine-day European scouting trip at the EuroLeague Final Four. Last night, he went out with other NBA general managers, scouts, and league officials in town for the tournament. He is going about business as usual after the hiring of Danny Ainge as the Celtics' executive director of basketball operations.

Wallace and Ainge spoke Friday for the first time about the Celtics. The conversation lasted about 15 minutes and Wallace ''went over a few things,'' including whom he was looking at overseas. Wallace and Ainge will get together when Wallace returns Thursday. At that time, Wallace expects to get a better idea of what his role will be. When reached yesterday, Wallace said he had ''no idea'' about how his role would be defined in the future.

''It's great to have someone of his status back with us,'' said Wallace. ''You can never have too much help. I look forward to working with him. We had a good conversation over the phone and I am anxious to get started with him. We didn't go into great detail about how it all will unfold. How this all evolves right now I really don't know.''
