Relaxed in a T-shirt and sweat pants, Jason Kidd walked off the Nets' practice court today with a smile, heading for vacation, free agency and points unknown.

Was it his last goodbye to New Jersey?

Later in the day, the Nets already began to change when the assistant coach Eddie Jordan accepted the Washington Wizards' head-coaching job, according to a person close to the Wizards.

Kidd, who resurrected the woebegone Nets, repeated that they were his No. 1 choice, but in the same breath he repeated that he saw "a lot of opportunities" in the free-agent landscape.

Kidd was coy about committing to any team, but he was very clear about the one factor that would make him decide.

"I want to win a championship, and that's the bottom line," Kidd said. He said he had only briefly discussed his future with his family and would map it out with his agent, Jeff Schwartz, "somewhere down the line.''
