Play locally, televise regionally. That's the idea behind a regional sports network being considered by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Grizzlies officials are talking about a network seen on cable systems within a 150-200 mile radius of Memphis, potentially reaching 1.7 million households - more if the network extends to Nashville.

Grizzlies officials will decide by early fall whether to go ahead with planning the network. If approved, it would begin televising events in the fall of 2004, coinciding with the opening of FedEx Forum.

The Grizzlies obviously are the marquee name, but the network could include the Memphis Redbirds, Memphis Motorsports Park, Memphis RiverKings and just about any other minor league, collegiate and high school sports you could think of.

The idea is to boost revenue from television. A cable network has a dual revenue stream: subscriber fees and advertising. The Grizzlies would take on all production costs, but keep most of the revenue.
