Just because the Pistons aren't planning to sign a free agent or make a trade today doesn't mean they're done trying to upgrade their roster.

Today is just the first day free agents are allowed to sign. And although the Pistons came up empty in their bid to attract Juwan Howard (Orlando), Alonzo Mourning (New Jersey) and P.J. Brown (New Orleans), they have the rest of the summer to pursue talent and trades.

Pistons President Joe Dumars has said he plans to continue to search for another frontcourt defender and rebounder, as well as another perimeter player.

That search could last right up to the start of training camp in October.

And what if the search comes up empty? Will it mean the Pistons have taken a step back in the Eastern Co.ference power structure?

"My response to that would be this," said John Hammond, vice president of basketball for the Pistons. "Do we have a competitive team right now? Yes. Can we compete against anyone? Yes. If we get a couple of breaks, can we win the Eastern Conference? Yes.
