The deal offered to Phoenix Suns free agent forward Antonio McDyess may have a safety net of sorts after all for the Detroit Pistons, who are targeting the injury-prone former All-Star to replace Mehmet Okur, who signed an offer sheet with the Utah Jazz this week.

Widely reported to be a guaranteed five-year contract worth $30 million, the deal actually is guaranteed for four years and $23 million, sources have said. The fifth and final year would only become guaranteed if McDyess plays at least 60 games in the fourth year of the deal.

The contract would be a relative steal for Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars, who has seen his former players sign elsewhere for large amounts on the open market. Okur signed for 5 years and $50 million in Utah, which the Pistons are not expected to match. One-time Piston Brian Cardinal, late of the Golden State Warriors, received a six-year contract worth $39 million from the Memphis Grizzlies.

If healthy, McDyess would join Elden Campbell and Darko Milicic in a potent Detroit bench to backup Piston starters Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace.
