Even though two teams are trying to take Kenyon Martin away from the Nets, it's unlikely New Jersey will just let him go.

The Nuggets are trying to swing a sign-and-trade with the Nets, which is the path that Nuggets officials see as their best hope of landing Martin.

They also have in reserve a maximum offer sheet with a contract total of $85 million, ready for him to sign.

But the Nets are not likely to let Martin walk away and get nothing in return.

"No way they're going to lose Martin and get nothing," one source said.

The Nets are concerned that the luxury tax could sock them for millions if they decide to retain Martin.

"There's nothing new," said Nets CEO Rod Thorn. "Time will tell."
