The Orlando Magic got word from the NBA Friday that they had been approved for a $2.6 million injury exception and GM Otis Smith told FLORIDA TODAY that the franchise is already ramping up efforts to acquire power forward or center help via a free agent or a trade.

The Magic were awarded the injury exception after NBA-appointed doctors declared veteran center Tony Battie to be officially out for the season. The veteran power forward tore the rotator cuff in his left shoulder during pre-camp drills and underwent season-ending surgery on Oct. 24. Magic team physician Dr. Craig Mintzer repaired the tear in Battie?s rotator cuff.
