The Bobcats are surprised by news that Tyson Chandler may opt out of the final year of his contract to hit the free agent market.

ESPN.com's Chad Ford reported on Friday that Chandler is considering doing so.

Chandler is scheduled to make $12.6 million in 2010-11 and certainly would not earn that much under a new deal after two injury-plagued seasons.

"I have not spoken to [agent] Jeff [Schwartz] in a while, but it's so funny - I was texting back-and-forth with Tyson just last night - that didn't come up," general manager Rod Higgins said Friday.
