The Mavericks are "hammering" out a contract offer for center Brendan Haywood, according to president Donnie Nelson.

A source claims that Haywood could command between $8 and $10 million next season.

Without a lot of options on the market, Dallas would prefer to re-sign Haywood than use their trade assets to acquire one.

"No secret," Nelson said. "Dirk is 1A and Brendan is 1B. We want to keep him a Maverick."

Haywood is expected to meet with the Heat on Saturday in North Carolina, according to agent Andy Miller.

"We are currently in contract discussions," said Miller of talks with Dallas. "But, at this time I couldn't give you an estimate as to the stage we are at."
