Duke and Kentucky have struggled mightily on the road.

What does that say about them as basketball teams? Statistician Ken Pomeroy wondered that in his blog. “If the basketball committee’s job is to select the best teams, I think they should have some empirical evidence that indicates that road games deserve more weight in identifying the best teams.”

The Sporting News’ Mike Decourcy performed his own study and found that over the past five years, 19 of the 20 Final Four teams had a winning road record.

The only exception: 2010 Duke, which went 5-5.

Among that group, 14 were at least four games over the break-even mark in road games, and eight won at least 80 percent.
