Tonight, I am at the 2006 NBA Draft with J.T. Magee and the press are beginning to file in and the ESPN crew is making their final preparations for the night.
5:15 PM
We arrive to the Draft and find the one and only Stephen A. Smith near the door on his cell phone.
The new NBA basketball is as ubiquitous as the Madonna gear being sold outside. (She is performing life in the adjacent arena)
5:59 PM
David Stern comes out to rehearse his opening statements.
6:04 PM
The ?Fire Isiah? and ?Sell the Knicks? chants have yet to begin, but are highly anticipated.
6:09 PM
J.T. believes that the Blazers will walk away the big winners tonight if they manage to select LaMarcus Aldridge at four and Brandon Roy at seven with Boston's pick.
It is my belief that Sebastian Telfair never puts on a Boston uniform.
6:10 PM
The players have now arrived and are standing on stage and are gathering for a group photo.
6:16
Ronnie Brewer's suit stands out the most and Andrea Bargnani appears to be the tallest player.
6:25
The players have now exited to the area behind the stage and the crew is bringing out the podium.
6:32
The players are filing back into the Theatre and are gathering near their seats at the tables located in front of the stage.
6:38
Toronto is trying to trade down to 4 or 5 and looking to select Randy Foye.
6:47
The Theatre at MSG has now opened its doors to the general public.
6:49
The quiet buzz of the media talking and sharing information has now been replaced by the initial 'Fire Dolan' chants.
6:52
Many players are on their telephones, text messaging.
7:00
Dan Patrick begins ESPN's Draft countdown.
7:13
One of the greatest things about Draft Night are the fans who come decked in their team's jerseys. You'll see Raptors jerseys, Bucks jerseys, but of course it is dominated by the Knicks.
7:15
Knicks' fans begin a variety of chants.. 'Fire Isiah' and 'Duck Folan' are the favorites so far.
7:21
J.J. Redick appears on screen and hears a chorus of boos. Most reporters here feel that Redick will be last 'Green Room' player selected tonight, but on RealGM Radio this afternoon, Phil Miller of the Salt Lake Tribune said that the Jazz were leaning towards Redick at 14.
7:24
Thabo Sefolosha's section is in the front row of the non-Green Room players and is J.T. Magee's pick to be the first player of that group to be selected. Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress was ahead of the curve on Sefolosha since November.
7:30
The lights here at the Theatre have been turned down and the draft is nearly underway. The Raptors are about to be officially on the clock to begin the 2006 NBA Draft.
7:33
RealGM Radio thinks it will be Bargnani to Toronto.
7:37
Bargnani goes to Toronto and the fans start the 'overrated' chant.
7:46Bargnani exits the Theatre's main hall through the crowd who begin to chant, 'USA, USA, USA.'
7:49
It has always been either Morrison or Gay and the crowd here wanted Gay.
7:56
The crowd here has quieted down significantly.
7:58
As Morrison exits the Theatre, he signs a few autographs, the first player to do so.
8:05
Tyrus Thomas just walked by and was on the phone laughing ecstatically, apparently Chicago is where he wants to be, as he doesn't mind the paycut of dropping to four.
8:09
In his post-draft interview, Andrea Bargnani said that he had no idea that Toronto would be selecting him. He added, "I think Toronto is an incredible organization, so I'm very happy."
8:34
Not too thrilled with the O'Bryant pick.
8:47
The RealGM Message Boards have more people online at this moment than it ever has before.
9:27
With the Kings on the clock and the Knicks on deck, the crowd that came to boo Dolan and Isiah is getting ready.
9:36
Crowd comes to its feet for Knicks pick and is utterly shocked at the selection.
9:47
The Jersey contingent goes crazy for the Marcus Williams selection. The obvious benefit of dropping this far is that he gets to go to one of the top clubs in the Eastern Conference and is all but guaranteed to succeed.
10:21 The crowd has thinned significantly and will clear out even more so in about 5 minutes after the Knicks' pick.
