Ronald Tillery of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports: The Cleveland Cavaliers have inquired about obtaining forward Ruben Patterson in a sign-and-trade deal, although who the Sonics would receive in return has yet to be determined.

Patterson, a restricted free agent who turns 26 next Tuesday, is expected to meet today with Cavs general manager Jim Paxson and head coach John Lucas. Portland also is believed to be pursuing Patterson.

The Sonics tendered Patterson a qualifying offer earlier this month, preserving their right to match offers. The subtle move also gives the Sonics more control over where Patterson lands.

Should Cleveland ultimately offer Patterson its $4.5 million, mid-level exception, the Sonics would have 15 days to match. However, it is more likely Patterson would leave Seattle in a sign-and-trade.
