Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports: As Heat training camp opened Tuesday, small forward remained a puzzle, with serviceable veterans competing but no clear-cut, long-term solution.
Seeking more offense, Riley signed free agents LaPhonso Ellis, Kendall Gill and Sam Mack to replace Bruce Bowen and Dan Majerle, who left via free agency. Ricky Davis also can play the position.
Riley said he's undecided about a starter, but Gill might have an edge, because the coach wants to use Ellis some at backup power forward.
``It will come down to probably Gill, Ricky, Sam,'' Riley said. ``Gill will be a little more [at shooting guard]. Ellis sometimes, because I like him as a [backup power forward]. We will let that run its course.''
As expected, the Heat signed 7-1 center Vladimir Stepania, who has played in 82 games for the Sonics and Nets over three years . . . Center Jim McIlvaine, whose contract is being bought out by the Nets, would be an option for the Heat if Miami can't sign Chris Gatling.
Bucks coach George Karl said he wants to sign Anthony Mason, but Mason is demanding a four-year deal starting at $4.5 million.
