Settling comfortably into the self-prescribed role of ''Uncle Reg,'' Reggie Miller sent two of his nephews into the summer with simple instructions.

He wanted Jonathan Bender to get fatter, and he wanted Al Harrington to get skinnier.

Those missions were dutifully accomplished. Bender reported to training camp weighing 219 pounds, up more than 20 from his listed playing weight of 198 last season. When he dons his jersey, it no longer looks like it's still on the hangar. Harrington's weight change was not as dramatic. He said he only lost ''four or five pounds'' from his normal 250, but his shape has been dramatically altered. The rounded corners of baby fat have been replaced by sharp edges of chiseled muscle.
