Latrell Sprewell opened the off-season by stating that the Knicks were too small up front. His remedy for that problem was to acquire his 6'10" buddy Chris Webber. The Knicks wound up with 6'7" (standing on a telephone book) Clarence Weatherspoon.
The New York Times reports that Spree's complaints haven't stopped. "We are thin up front," Sprewell said Friday. "So I'm not going to sit up here and say we're a finals team right now. I don't necessarily feel that. I feel we have the potential to probably work towards that. But realistically, probably not. I'm just being straightforward."
Marcus Camby agrees with Sprewell's comments, according to the New York Post. Camby believes the Knicks will address their lack of size before the season is over. But Jeff Van Gundy doesn't want to hear any of it. "Size matters in this league, but I'm not going to concern myself with what we may not have," Van Gundy said.
The Post further reports that attempts to deal Charlie Ward for a big man have gone flat. One reason for their change of heart is center Felton Spencer came into camp in very good shape as opposed to last season.
