Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - A week before the deadline, it seems unlikely Denver Nuggets forward-center Raef LaFrentz will be signed to a contract extension.

The Nuggets have until Oct. 31 to re-sign LaFrentz. If an agreement isn't reached, the 6-foot-11, 240-pounder will be a restricted free agent after this season.

LaFrentz's agent, Michael Higgins, said contract length and financial terms are the main reasons for the holdup. With that in mind, Higgins said he won't be surprised if contract discussions are pushed back to next summer.

"We really haven't talked about the do's and don'ts," Higgins said Monday. "Just a rough sketch. We'll probably talk again, but I don't know if we can get something done with a week left. It's not an easy deal. This is not (Toronto's) Vince Carter. Not a 20-minute conversation. It is going to take some creativity and work to get the deal done."

Said Nuggets assistant general manager David Fredman: "We take the philosophy that we don't want to make any decisions under duress. We think a lot of Raef. We still retain his rights. I wouldn't read anything negative into it if we don't get anything done."

The Nuggets seem to have the upper hand. Even if LaFrentz signs a contract offer sheet with another team next offseason, Denver has 15 days to match it. Last week, Golden State matched an offer sheet by the Houston Rockets and kept forward-center Marc Jackson.

"We're trying to feel each other out and trying to make a deal," Higgins said. "I don't think we're there. If we don't get this done, there is no bad blood or repercussions. We'll just have to wait until July."
