They were all over the place, scrambling on defense, converting on offense, making the other team pay for its mistakes.
And it wasn't the team with the best record in the Western Conference last year.
Shining for the second consecutive game and winning its first, the SuperSonics defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 114-108, last night in their home opener in KeyArena.
An appreciative crowd of 15,491, about 1,500 short of a sellout, supported the Sonics as they held off the Spurs in the fourth quarter.
Gary Payton came alive as he always does when big shots are needed, hitting his final five attempts, including a pair of spinning, fading baseline jumpers over two different Spurs defenders in the final minute.
Payton put the last one in the familiar face of Terry Porter, closing it out with 26 seconds to go, putting San Antonio in full grovel and improving the Sonics to 1-1.
