Maybe if they set their alarm clocks next time, it wouldn't seem like such an uphill climb. The wake-up call came too late.
The Orlando Magic spent an evening at home playing catch-up, but they never could catch on to wily veteran Gary Payton, losing in double overtime 123-119 Monday night to the lightly regarded Seattle SuperSonics.
We dug ourselves a hole that we never should have been in," said Tracy McGrady. "But we still gave ourselves a chance to win. We just couldn't get it done. And that's what is so disappointing."
McGrady had 27 points in a career-high 54 minutes, but he failed on the Magic's final two possessions. He threw the ball out of bounds with :24 remaining, then he missed a hotly-contested layup with 12 seconds left, letting the Sonics escape with the victory they deserved.
Payton had 32 points -- including 11 in the two overtime periods -- and 11 assists to prod the Sonics (2-2) to an upset.
