Tim Povtak and Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel reports: Orlando Magic forward Grant Hill has developed bone spurs on the front of his left ankle. It's a problem unrelated to his previous two ankle surgeries but serious enough that he may need a week of rest before he can return.

The diagnosis was made Tuesday afternoon by Dr. Mark Myerson of Baltimore, who performed surgery to repair a broken bone on the inside of the same ankle 10 months ago.
Hill flew to Baltimore after exams in Orlando revealed few clues as to what had caused the recent pain.

"This is a new injury, not in any way related to the old stress fracture," Myerson said. "What he has done is jammed his ankle joint, which has caused the inflammation. It's very common in jumping and kicking athletes. With some rest, he'll be fine."

Hill returned to Orlando on Tuesday night, and he is expected to undergo more testing today. Myerson said it was premature to speculate on the length of time Hill would need to recover fully.

"It's unrealistic to set a target on that yet, at least until later in the week," Myerson said. "We're all a little concerned. Grant was worried. We're cautiously optimistic at this point.
