In his first two months with the Spurs, Smith has made 56.7 percent of his 3-pointers (55 of 97), putting him on pace to break the NBA record of 52.4 percent set by Steve Kerr.

Kerr set his mark in the 1994-95 season when the apex of the 3-point line measured 22 feet. In the four seasons since the apex was moved back to 23 feet, 9 inches, no player has shot even 50 percent. Smith has shot so well that even when he goes 4 for 8 ? as he did against Portland on Dec. 19 ? his percentage suffers.

"From now on, I've got to go 2 for 3," Smith said, laughing. "If it were February or March, I might say I had a good chance at getting (the record), but it's early."
