The DeVos family, the Grand Rapids-based founders of the Amway Corporation and owners of the Orlando Magic, is taking the initial steps toward getting out of the NBA business.
Owner Rich DeVos told the Orlando Sentinel in today's editions he is "wearing down" and putting the team up for sale. He said he couldn't guarantee the team's new owner will keep the club in Orlando.
"I can't ask him to do anything," DeVos said. "I don't see any reason why he would want to leave Orlando. Where are you going and what's the rationale of that?"
Already, a potential buyer has stepped forth -- former Sixers President Pat Croce.
Croce worked for the Magic as a conditioning consultant during the early 1990s. He owned a national chain of physical-therapy centers, including the Orlando Sports Medicine Center, which he sold for some $40 million. He has kept his home in Longboat Key, Fla.
