Jennifer Bellis of the San Antonio Express News reports that the San Antonio Spurs are trying to get a WNBA franchise, even though no plans for WNBA expansion have been announced. The 16 team league will probably expand at some point, but no decision has been made as to when. The Spurs' application was rejected in the WNBA's initial creation because the Alamodome was inadequate. But, the new SBC Center is due to open next fall and the Spurs are making sure it is WNBA-ready as well as NBA-ready. WNBA president, Val Ackerman, said that San Antonio is a good prospect for expansion.
