Steve Wyche and Kathy Orton of the Washington Post report that the Washington Wizards would like to acquire Chicago Bulls power forward Charles Oakley, via trade or if he is released, but neither scenario appears likely, a team source said today.
A deal with Chicago seems unlikely. The Wizards would likely have to part with Christian Laettner or Etan Thomas, neither of whom are likely to interest Jerry Krause. While the article mentions Kwame Brown as potential trade bait, I think Wiz fans can rest easy knowing that he won't be traded for a player such as Oakley.
There were reports that Chicago might consider cutting Oakley and paying him the remainder of his contract, making him a free agent who could sign with any team for a minimum salary. However, cutting Oakley does not seem to be in the Bulls' plans, the Wizards source said.
