Who is this season's Dikembe Mutombo?
Nick Van Exel.
Slightly different statures. Their games are a bit different. Deke was the talk of the Trade Deadline last season, now Little Nicky has taken his place.
Chris Broussard of the New York Times reports that the Knicks and Nuggets are discussing a trade that would feature Van Exel and oft-injured Knicks center Marcus Camby as the key components.
No offers have been made, but the teams are discussing two scenarios. The first would send Camby and guard Mark Jackson to Denver for Van Exel and James Posey, an athletic 6-foot-8 swingman. The other would bring Van Exel and the versatile 7-footer Raef LaFrentz to New York for Camby, Jackson and probably Travis Knight. Although Broussard mentions Felton Spencer as trade fodder, it is important to note that Spencer cannot be traded because he is signed to a 1-year contract and will have Early Qualifying Veteran Rights after the season, AKA Early Bird Rights.
Marc Berman of the New York Post reports that the Knicks and Nuggets are trying to find a third team. According to Berman, the Nuggets prefer to get younger and therefore would have no interest in Allan Houston or Latrell Sprewell. The Nuggets undoubtedly would prefer to get healthier as well, eliminating Marcus "Captain Crutch" Camby from the picture.
