Chicago is expected to unload Charles Oakley before the Feb. 21 trade deadline, and Cleveland was mentioned in an Internet report as one of four places Oakley might end up. If Cavs coach John Lucas has anything to say about it, fans shouldn't hold their breath.
``For somebody that's getting ready to win a championship and needs that piece, he's a nice fit,'' Lucas said.
Besides the fact that Oakley and Cleveland's Tyrone Hill don't get along, Lucas would rather assess what the Cavs have to work with for the future rather than muddling the picture by bringing in more players.
``I want to be fair to everybody on this team,'' Lucas said. ``Take a good look and evaluate what we have. Then make the proper additions and subtractions. Who fits with what I'm trying to do and who doesn't fit, who can go somewhere and who can't go somewhere.''
A POINT SHORT -- Even with back-to-back games last night and tonight at Milwaukee, Lucas doesn't expect to play Bimbo Coles. Coles sprained his knee Feb. 2 against Detroit. Trajan Langdon is on the injured list with a sprained right ankle and isn't eligible to come off until Saturday, which means Cleveland's lone point guard is Andre Miller.
``I like Andre to play a lot of minutes,'' Lucas said. ``I want him to continue to grow, but I don't want to wear him out.''
Forward Lamond Murray would be the backup point guard in a pinch.
``I tried him there today,'' Lucas said of Murray. ``Not yet.''
ONE BIG GOAL -- As the Cavs opened the second half of the season, guard Bryant Stith had one major wish on his list.
``I'd just like to see everybody stay healthy,'' Stith said. ``Even though injuries are a part of sports, it can set your team back, especially a young team. We especially need this time to solidify chemistry and get guys some more experience, particularly Chris Mihm, Andre, get Tyrone back healthy and playing to the level he's capable. That's my first priority.
``Every time we think we're starting to turn the corner, then we suffer a minor setback. First it was coming to training camp without Tyrone, Z (Zydrunas Ilgauskas) playing limited minutes, Lamond breaking his nose. The list goes on. We've had more than our share.
``We have to be able to learn from this experience and remember. When we play the rest of the games, try to look at the big picture and not get caught up in the short term.''
BACK TO SCHOOL -- Lucas used the All-Star break to visit his son, John, who plays basketball for Baylor.
``He scored 19 points and hit the winning shot against Missouri,'' Lucas said. ``I had to buy $400 worth of groceries and clean up his room.''
