No, they are not going to fire Don Nelson after the disappointing playoff loss to the Sacramento Kings?
Mavs owner Mark Cuban said Monday he will meet with coach Don Nelson during the off season to see if Nelson would like to coach beyond the 2002-03 season. Nelson, signed to a 11 year contract extension in 2000 which sees him coach the team through next season, then act as GM only for three more years, then act as a Red Auerbach type consultant for the remaining five years.
Nelson, however, has been having fun on the Mavericks bench according to Cuban, and may coach the team beyond his current tenture. Either way a successor will come internally for the Mavericks head position, Cuban naming both Donnie Nelson and Del Harris as possibilities with Cuban adding "the team has always responded well whenever Donnie's had to take over."
"We haven't talked about it for a while, but we'll sit down and discuss it. What I do know is that Nellie's still having fun."
Said Nelson: "I don't even want to go there now. I turn 62 on Wednesday, and I just want to enjoy that. I'm sure Mark will address it when the time is right."
