Mark J. Spears of the Denver Post reports that Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe is looking at the Dallas Mavericks? staff for his next head coach.
Mavs? assistant coaches Donn Nelson and Del Harris are both expected to interview for the Nuggets? position. Nelson should be interviewed some time this week while Harris will have to wait until he returns from a European scouting trip to meet with Vandeweghe.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban will permission for his coaches to talk with Denver. "I have no problem with it," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said via e-mail. "If you don't let people go after their goals, when they come back they aren't nearly as focused. If you do let them interview and possibly achieve, they are thrilled for the chance you gave them. If they don't get the job, they come back more focused to do the things that can get them to the next level."
Vandeweghe worked for the Mavericks for two seasons as the director of player development and an assistant before being hired by the Nuggets on Aug. 9. Since then, a Mavericks-Nuggets pipeline has evolved.
After spending a season as the Mavericks' assistant director of player development, Jarinn Akana followed Vandeweghe to Denver to become a player development coach and Asia scout. On Sept. 24, the Nuggets acquired the rights to rookie point guard Kenny Satterfield from Dallas in exchange for a future second-round pick. And on Feb. 21, the Nuggets and Mavericks made a seven-player trade.
