Fred Kerber of the New York Post reports that the Nets are talking to free agent guard Chris Childs. They are looking for a backup point guard for Jason Kidd and Childs may be willing to fill that role. The Nets met with Child?s agent Lon Babby yesterday.

"It was a good meeting," said team president Rod Thorn of the one-hour session. "He's a candidate, a guy with a lot of experience who has played well. He's a good player."

"A very productive meeting," said Babby. "Chris has made it clear he would be willing to play whatever role they had. And they were pretty candid in what they're looking for."

Childs, 34, who began his pro career with the Nets, made $5.2 million last season, his final year on a six-year deal inked with the Knicks. If he signed with the Nets, he'd be somewhere between the mid-level ($4.7 million) and minimum ($1.4 million) exceptions.
