The Jazz's point guard played like he was trying to impress his hometown crowd. Which is odd, because Mark Jackson is from New York City.

Jackson made a terrific first impression with his new team Sunday, racking up eight assists and helping the Jazz pull away in the fourth quarter for a victory in their 2002 preseason opener, 89-82 over Seattle.

Oh, the local kid had a good night too. John Stockton delighted a nearly full Spokane Arena by scoring nine points, collecting five rebounds and adding six assists, all in only 19 minutes. He never seemed to notice the ovations -- "Maybe it's because I would get emotional, so I tried not to think about it," he said -- but at least one expert said the occasion was plenty meaningful for the Gonzaga grad.
