The Jazz got a look at some of their new faces on Sunday night. But a new body on an old face may have been the most encouraging addition to the lineup.
John Amaechi, a $2-million bust in his first season in Utah, played 23 minutes in relief of Karl Malone during the Jazz's 89-82 victory over Seattle, and looked nothing like the hulking, sulking presence of a year ago.
Amaechi scored nine points, blocked two shots and made a couple of intuitive passes, giving coach Jerry Sloan reason to hope that the 31-year-old Brit can step into the power forward void created by Donyell Marshall's departure. On a team where the other candidates for the job are a little small (Scott Padgett, Matt Harpring) or needed elsewhere (Jarron Collins), the return of Amaechi to the 10-points-a-game form he displayed a few years ago would address a glaring weakness -- and even allow the 39-year-old Malone to rest a little.
