Steve Popper of the New York Times reports that the Knicks are desperately trying to upgrade their point guard position, and have been unable to do anything via trade. And the two point guards they chose in the draft are hardly in position to make an impact ? Frank Williams of Illinois fractured his left wrist in the Boston Summer League and Milos Vujanic will spend at least one more season playing in Yugoslavia.

So Knicks coach Don Chaney has announced that Charlie Ward would be the starting point guard. Ward beat out Howard Eisley for the position.

Over the past several seasons, the Knicks have repeatedly tried to trade Ward. Chaney admits that the decision was made based on the cards dealt to him. When asked today if he was satisfied with Ward as his starting point guard, said: "Right now I am. He and Howard are all I have. I have no choice."
