Jerry Sloan is trying to get DeShawn Stevenson to adapt to his sweat-and-toil teachings. Stevenson is trying to get Sloan to accept some of his above-the-rim stylishness. Reaching an uneasy balance could determine what sort of season the Jazz have.

Stevenson teamed with young backup point guard Carlos Arroyo to provide many of the highlights in a Saturday-morning scrimmage at the Delta Center, but a squad captained, and energized, by John Stockton -- practically as old as his two backcourt teammates combined -- won the game, 72-59 in overtime.

The Bear danced around and the crowd of roughly 2,000 chomped on free Krispy Kremes, but anyone who believed the 90-minute scrimmage would be equally light-hearted doesn't understand Sloan, Stockton and the Jazz.
