Yank the obit. Cancel the flowers. The funeral is on hold.

The Jazz, buried by some after losing their first two games of the 2002-2003 NBA regular season in less-than-fine fashion, showed they're not dead just yet by hanging on to beat Golden State 101-92 in their home opener Saturday night at the Delta Center.

Avoiding its first 0-3 start since the 1979-80 season offered a measure of relief for 1-2 Utah, which watched the Warriors creep back to within three before it pulled away in the final minute with a big basket by reserve forward Scott Padgett.

Karl Malone followed with a layup to cap his game-high 26 points and Calbert Cheaney closed with a baseline jumper for the Jazz, who were at wit's end after season-opening losses at New Orleans on Wednesday night and at Atlanta on Thursday night.
