Calbert Cheaney will be back home in Indiana today, attending the funeral of his best friend. Before he left, he set an impressive example of working through adversity.

Cheaney scored a season-high 14 points, hit seven of his 14 shots, and helped the Jazz force Memphis out of a zone defense in the second quarter, all important factors in Utah's 104-71 rout of the Grizzlies.

Important, sure. But Cheaney knows that basketball is hardly the most important thing in his life this week. His lifelong best friend, 33-year-old Corey Kelley, died of cancer Tuesday.

Utah coach Jerry Sloan can't picture himself wearing a microphone and broadcasting a basketball game, but he respects those who do. In fact, the Jazz coach believes Hubie Brown's 14 years of experience on CBS and Turner Sports as made him even more qualified to coach Memphis, not less.

"He hasn't sat out [of basketball]. He didn't go anywhere," Sloan said. "He probably has as much information, if not more, than any coach in basketball, because he gets firsthand information from a lot of people on a lot of teams."
