Perry Farrell of the Detroit Free press and Chris McCosky of the Detroit News report: Sunday was not a good day for the Detroit Pistons. They lost a game, the top seed in the Eastern Conference, and possibily their best player for an unknown amount of team.
All-Star center Ben Wallace was injured during Detroit's 89-83 loss at home to the San Antonio Spurs. A loss that put them half a game back of New Jersey for the East's #1 need.
With 1:07 left in the first half, Ben Wallace rolled his ankle when Tayshawn Prince fell into him after trying to draw a charge from Spurs guard Speedy Claxton.
"I thought if I had gotten there a little earlier he would've seen me," Prince said. "I could feel it once I fell, and I kind of knew it was him for the simple fact that he is always back there blocking shots. Once I fell, I just started to feel somebody's leg, and that was the first thing I thought about. If I had gotten there early, he wouldn't have had to be there. That is why I was disappointed."
The injury is being diagnosed as a sprained left medial collateral ligament.
Wallace will have a magnetic resonance imaging exam today to see if there is further damage.
"We'll know more tomorrow," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's unfortunate to lose him. It looks like we are going to lose him for some games, I'm not sure how many. That's a blow."
Right now, it is believed that Wallace will miss the remainder of the season and depending on the MRI, possibily some playoff games.
