The ball is in Jerry Sloan's court. But if Sloan decided to pass on returning for a 16th season as the Jazz's head coach, Jazz owner Larry H. Miller already has a successor in mind.
The job, should Sloan retire, will be offered to longtime assistant Phil Johnson, Miller said Wednesday.
"We truly do feel we're fortunate in that we think we effectively have two head coaches," Miller said. "And Phil has been so good to this franchise, so fair, and so loyal to Jerry, that we've made it very clear to him that if Jerry were to step aside, now or later, and Phil still wanted it, that it would be his."
