NBA Commissioner David Stern said tonight he is optimistic that Michael Jordan will be back in the NBA in some capacity, most likely as an executive or owner, before next season. Jordan, who was not rehired as a top executive by Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin after spending 31/2 years with the team, two as a player, has explored putting together an ownership group to buy the Milwaukee Bucks.
Charlotte team owner Bob Johnson also has pursued Jordan to be a part owner and executive with the expansion franchise.
"It's my strong sense that he will be back in our league by the 2003-2004 season," Stern said in a news conference before tonight's second game of the NBA Finals.
