While Carmelo Anthony, Darko Milicic, Chris Bosh, T.J. Ford and a handful of other future first-round picks were in a Wyndham Hotel conference room meeting the media Saturday, the one player about to shake up the top of the draft was not.
That's because until late last week, few knew about the physical abilities of 18-year-old 7-5 Russian center Pavel Podkolzine. But after his individual workout Friday floored several NBA scouts and executives, Podkolzine looks like a lock as a selection in the top 10 and possibly top five.
Podkolzine did not work out against other players and didn't shoot particularly well during the 45-minute session. But it was the Russian's movement and agility at his size that most impressed NBA personnel.
Podkolzine particularly stirred interest when he ran the length of the floor, dunked, retrieved the ball, ran to the other end to dunk -- and repeated that several times. Podkolzine not only dunked with flair but ran the floor extremely well, by all accounts.
Heat coach Pat Riley and general manager Randy Pfund saw the workout, and the Heat is in the process of scheduling a private workout in Miami with Podkolzine.
