After an extensive search, the Knicks are close to completing their coaching staff. Coach Don Chaney is strongly considering two interim head coaches, Terry Stotts of Atlanta and Dennis Johnson of the Los Angeles Clippers, as his final assistant. The Knicks have received permission to speak with them.

Lon Kruger, who was fired last season as coach of the Atlanta Hawks, is also a possibility, as is Rick Mahorn, who worked as an assistant for Detroit and served as a television analyst for the Pistons last season. The Knicks have also spoken with Sam Vincent, who has coached in the National Basketball Development League.

The former Knick John Starks is being considered for the position of coaching associate.
