Negotiations cannot take place until July 1, but Nets president Rod Thorn plans to have an informal conversation with Jason Kidd's agent, Jeff Schwartz, perhaps today.
"Jeff is in town to talk to Jason to sort of get their game plan together," Thorn said yesterday. "We will have conversations as early as (today) to find out where we fit in that game plan."

In five days, Kidd is free to talk to any teams and while it would appear only San Antonio and the Nets can give him what he wants - a chance to win a title and max dollars - the point guard planned to discuss his options with Schwartz, who did not return phone calls, this week.

Kidd, who can't officially sign until July16, said Monday he is curious to see what the Nets do with free agents Lucious Harris and Kenyon Martin, who is eligible for a contract extension starting Aug. 1.

"I'm happy to see that I have an assistant general manager," Thorn joked. "We'll make (Kidd) the general manager, how about that?"

When asked if he knows what Kidd is thinking, Thorn answered, "No. Not at this time. But I will know shortly."
