Washington Wizards guard Jerry Stackhouse was arrested in Atlantic Beach, N.C., yesterday and charged with misdemeanor assault of a female after a dispute over a rental property, police there said.

Stackhouse, 28, was arrested at about 2:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Chris Fuller of the Atlantic Beach Police Department. Fuller said police reported to a rental property after receiving a call from a woman whose name was not disclosed.

"There was a call to this office in regards to a dispute between a landlord and a tenant with that tenant being Mr. Stackhouse," Fuller said last night. "The dispute arose because Mr. Stackhouse thought he had to vacate the property Monday. The rental company [Coldwell Banker] said he had to be out [Sunday]."

Fuller said sometime during the discussion Stackhouse grabbed for the contract, which was in the agent's hand, and instead grabbed the agent.

"She felt threatened to the point where she made the phone call to the police department," Fuller said. "She was referred to the magistrate's office and obtained a warrant for assault on a female."

The police contacted Stackhouse, who reported to the Atlantic Beach Police Department with a lawyer. The warrant was served and the 6-foot-6, 218-pound Stackhouse was charged at the Carteret County Jail, according to Fuller. Fuller said a court date probably was set, but said he did not have that information.
