Gilbert Arenas, who signed a six-year, $64 million offer sheet with the Washington Wizards in July, pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor weapons and vehicle charges Tuesday.

Arenas, 21, faces charges of possessing a concealed weapon and driving without a license, stemming from a June traffic stop in San Francisco. His attorney entered the plea in San Mateo, Calif., on behalf of Arenas, who wasn't in the courtroom.

If convicted, Arenas could face up to six months in jail.

Meantime, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard is expected to become a Washington Wizard officially by midnight. The Golden State Warriors have until that point to match the Wizards' offer to the restricted free agent.

But the only way the Warriors could match the deal is to dump $20 million in salaries, meaning they would have to unload several players, such as Danny Fortson, Bob Sura or Erick Dampier and get nothing in return.

The Warriors said they would not match the offer in July, and a day later signed free agent point guard Speedy Claxton.

As a formality, the Warriors are allowed 15 days after the Wizards' offer to counteroffer. Arenas could be in town Friday for a news conference to announce his signing.
