All summer, Rodney White has heard how the Denver Nuggets are going to sign a shooting guard. All summer, he has heard speculation that he'll be heading back to the bench.

With the free-agency signing period a month old, though, White remains the top candidate to start next season at shooting guard.

"Everybody talks about Corey Maggette and Stephen Jackson," White said Friday, referring to two free-agent shooting guards who were given the grand tour of Denver this summer. "They're all good players. But I feel I'm a good player."

The Nuggets still are planning to sign a shooting guard. General manager Kiki Vandeweghe said he is "pinning myself down" to make a decision this weekend.

But it no longer appears the primary motivation is to bring in a replacement for White, who averaged nine points in his second season. Dion Glover, who worked out Wednesday and Thursday in Denver, might have emerged as the top candidate, but he isn't someone who would be handed a starting job.

"Hopefully, Rodney can really improve," Vandeweghe said. "He's a talented kid. If he can play (shooting guard), we don't have to work too much for that."
