Mateen Cleaves is no longer a member of the Cavaliers, but he might be down the road.

The point guard was released Tuesday when Cleveland activated Jeff McInnis, but coach Paul Silas would love to have the Michigan State product play with the Cavaliers during summer league action.

Should the 6-foot-1 guard play well there, he could be invited to training camp, where he would have a chance of making the team as the fifth guard on the roster.

With McInnis sidelined by a bruised shoulder, Cleaves played in four games with the Cavaliers and made two starts, averaging 3.8 points and 4.8 assists in 23 minutes per night.

His Achilles heel was shooting, as it has been throughout his career. Cleaves shot .304 with the Cavaliers (7-of-23) and was 1-of-2 at the line. He missed his only 3-point attempt.

"Teams were laying off him and daring him to shoot," Silas said. "He has to be some kind of threat. If that comes about, he can play in this league."
